You are Beautiful

"You're so pretty."

My friend said the words as she studied my face. People have said I'm pretty before, but when this friend said it, there was something honest about her words. She didn't just throw it out like a meaningless compliment. It was genuine.

In front of the mirror that night, I studied my reflection.

And I genuinely loved what I saw.

Look at your eyes when you smile, I thought to myself. Look at what a beautiful blue-green they are, and how they have an innocent sparkle in them. Look at your flowing brown hair with its soft curls.

I wasn't being conceited, like, "Look how gorgeous I am! I'm all that!" Not at all. I was just really taking the time to love what God had made...picking out the beautiful traits He notices rather than the "flaws" I always notice.

The next day, I was full of joy and confidence. I desired to let others know how loved they are, how beautiful they are.

It's interesting how one seemingly simple compliment could mean so much and could motivate me to let other people know that God made them beautiful...truly beautiful. Not just outwardly "cute" or "hot," but inwardly unique, special, treasured, cherished, and adored by their Maker.

Let me tell you, girl...you are beautiful. And I genuinely mean that. You are beautiful because you were created by God and are loved unconditionally by Him. When you start to feel insecure, unimportant, unneeded...remember that you belong to God. He always wants you, will always listen to you, is always there for you, and will never, EVER change (Hebrews 13:8). His love won't go away. He always thinks you are beautiful.

I'd like to encourage you girls to take the time to give someone a genuine, heartfelt compliment today. You never know how much it could mean to them.

1 Peter 3:3-4
Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.

I love this so so so so so much. You are SO beautiful and I am beautiful and we are all beautiful. I think it's easy to get caught up in the world's views of beauty and in comparing ourselves, but you said it perfectly! We all have eternal worth from God and we ARE beautiful!

it's funny, because we really don't think a compliment means that much to a person. yet i carry them around for a long time.

Well said, Talia. This is such an issue in our culture, and not just for you youthful women. The message from our world is loud and clear--one must be young, skinny and 'hot' to be beautiful. If we can just see the beauty that our Father sees and internalize it...a major struggle for many of us. Keep speaking truth, girl--it is needed! :)

Just what I needed. I was feeling insecure and all that but this is exactly what I needed to hear. God is really speaking through you, Talia. To a lot of people.

Wow, thanks so much for sharing this! You're such a talented writer and God is definitely using that to spread truths like this. This made my day. Keep on doing this!
